PASSIVE SOLAR ASSESSMENTS

HISTORY

This project saw its genesis in the shock of the Peak Oil days of the 1970's. This time also saw the birth of a new era in Environmentalism and Social Justice, which moved this project along.

There was a flurry of interest and activity in all sorts of energy efficiency and conservation measures, which became debates, and eventually launched more advanced Building Codes, along with protocols for upgrading them. These included the R2000 home standard which pointed to today's concepts and standards of "Passive House" and "Net Zero" strategies.

Over the years as new concepts, options, techniques and materials were developed we incorporated them into calculators as needed; first manually with graphs, and later with computer software as the Personal Computer launched in the 90's.

We have kept these calculators and combined them into modeling software called PSA℠ which focuses on heat flow from the homeowner's view. This is critical because it answers questions like "Should I add to the attic insulation or finish the basement"? All of the analysis is based on accepted norms as found in Standards by ASHRAE, Manual J, Passive House and Building Codes.

Architects and Developers have Energy Analysis available to them in their design software, but the Homeowner, whose house is already built, does not. This is where we can help since your ability to renovate may be limited.

With the current Environmental concerns adding renewed vigor in Energy and Emissions Savings, there are various programs and incentives available. These are generally rating systems and are often tied to Government or Corporate incentives. As rating systems they can prioritize items but provide little knowledge for the homeowner. We provide that knowledge. We operate on the basis that the homeowner knows to replace dead lightbulbs with energy efficient ones, and likewise for appliances when they stop working.
